St Mary’s Lourdes Association was formed on the 8th June 1978. Our first Pilgrimage to Lourdes took place on 24th May 1979, when 50 people travelled out to Lourdes with our Parish Priest Fr J K Ashton as our Priest Leader. Every year since 1979 there has been an Annual Pilgrimage to Lourdes from Birchley.
2008 will be the Final Pilgrimage from Birchley lead by Maureen - don't miss it!

Pilgrimage 2008 Our 30th Annual Pilgrimage, 20th May to 6th June 150th Anniversary of the First Apparition Pope Benedict XVI is to visit in Sept/Oct LOURDES JUBILEE PLENARY INDULGENCE Pilgrims visiting Lourdes during the Jubilee 150 Year (8 Dec 2007 - 7 Dec 2008) can obtain a special Plenary Indulgence issued by Pope Benedict XVI. Our 27th Annual Pilgrimage, 19th to 26th August Three options were available:- 1) Flying out Friday 19th and returning home on Monday 22nd. 2) Flying out Monday 22nd and returning home on Friday 26th. 3) The whole week, fly out Friday 19th and return Monday 26th.

August 2003 - Our 25th Annual Pilgrimage. On Monday 11th August 2003 we flew from Manchester as usual and once again stayed at the beautifully-appointed, modern hotel “Paradis” for our 8-day pilgrimage. To-date, over the first 23 years, we raised more than £27,500
and paid for 69 sick people to travel to Lourdes, either by air with our
main pilgrimage or by train with the Liverpool Archdiocesan Pilgrimage. These
funds are raised by a small group in the parish who hold various functions and
raffles during the year. Each year we collect for a large Parish Candle. The candle
is bought in Lourdes and we decorate with flowers and our Parish Intentions
are written down the front. The candle is then blessed and taken down to the
Grotto where it is lit. Each year everyone in the parish has the opportunity to
have a single candle lit for them. On our 2002 pilgrimage, Maureen lit 119 single
candles - what a great honour! Our news and functions are publicised in the Parish Newsletter
(and now on the Parish Website) and our parish priest, Fr Bernard, leaves our
small committee to continue organising and running this annual event.
