| Birchley St Marys Third World Group |
Contact: Joan Merry Funds are contributed by individual donation, usually through Third World collection boxes placed in the church porch at all weekend Masses. The group consists of five people who meet once a month to review and consider Third World causes and charities to support, and to allocate funds accordingly. |

A major policy of the group has always been to keep overhead costs in handling donations to a minimum by dealing directly with those working in the countries concerned. They make full use of organisations such as The Littleway Association, who take no cut, give excellent feedback, and show genuine appreciation for the support given. Donations are not restricted to Catholic-run organisations, but due consideration is always given in trying to ensure that all causes supported would meet the full approval of the Catholic Church. By publicising their work through notices, Church Newsletter, reports, and special collections, the group raises the general level of awareness in Third World issues throughout the local community. Other than authorising the posting of notices in the church, Special Collections, and CAFOD (bi-annual collections run by the parish priest, which the group traditionally supports from their funds) Fr Bernard leaves them to just get on with it! The group has been operating successfully in this manner for more than 25 years, and their projects have always been, and continue to be, very generously supported by parishioners. The many grateful letters and prayers received from causes supported clearly demonstrate how very effective they have been.
